LaReisha’s Story

Based in the Twin Cities, the Firefly Sisterhood connects women diagnosed with breast cancer and trained breast cancer survivors to offer support, guidance and hope.

.

“Well, now what??” These are the words many women think following breast cancer treatment, or even in the quieter moment between treatments. After a long stretch of frequent doctor appointments, treatment regimens, visits from family and friends, and support from her medical team, a woman is forced to confront finding the oft-used ‘new normal’, to dig deeply within herself.

LaReisha McGee has worked hard to process and learn the answers to the question, “Who am I now?” In 2010, after feeling concern about her breast health and receiving a bit of a brush off from her general doctor, LaReisha knew she had to advocate for herself when a gut feeling told her it was more. Further testing did, in fact, reveal breast cancer. The whirlwind of treatment ensued, along with the work of navigating survivorship.

More than six years later, LaReisha is now living life fully as a strong, healthy, active, and involved woman.

Having served on Firefly Sisterhood’s board of directors for nearly two years, LaReisha was among our very first trained Guides and continues to play an active role in supporting other women facing breast cancer. We are very grateful for the important role she continues to play as a Guide and committee member with Firefly!
