Our Firefly Sisterhood Guides: Priceless!

Just shy of our third birthday, Firefly Sisterhood recently made our 400th match…yep, 400 connections between women recently diagnosed with breast cancer and inspirational survivors! While fulfilling our mission takes plenty of ‘behind the scenes’ work (which we’re honored to have the opportunity to do!), none of it would be possible without the inspiration and generosity of our volunteer peer mentors. Our Firefly Guides are the lifeblood of our program and the reason so many women recently diagnosed in our community have the gift of hope, support, and encouragement.

It’s National Volunteer Week, and we’d like to offer a tremendous thank you to all of our Firefly Sisterhood volunteers – your willingness to share your experience, time, energy, and light is priceless. So, why do our Guides do it? We thought you’d like to hear, in their own words, some of the reasons why:

“I felt that I was able to give back some of what was given to me during my breast cancer journey.”

“When you help others, it’s never one sided. You always get something back, which gives me perspective while living with cancer.”

“It felt good to share some of my hard-earned knowledge with this person who was just starting down the road.”

“(It gave me) perspective on my own journey and the opportunity to help someone else and allay some of their fears and concerns.”

“I think everyone who goes through a challenging situation like a breast cancer diagnosis wants to have some good, some meaning, some benefit come out of it. If my view from a little further down the road helps to assuage the anxiety and isolation of someone more recently diagnosed, then we both benefit.”

Thank you, dear volunteers, for helping to light the way for so many women in our community!
