The Power of Social Support

Connection. It’s what we humans crave and what very often brings meaning to our lives. The opportunity to sit with another, to share a story, to ask a question, to listen, to share a laugh: the benefits go beyond the present engagement. Whether a person is facing a cancer diagnosis or not, the health advantages of relating to others and having social ties are being studied more and more by researchers in the medical community.

According to a new study published in the journal Cancer, women with breast cancer who are socially isolated tend to have higher rates of recurrence and mortality. For this reason, Firefly Sisterhood is committed to reaching as many women with breast cancer as possible throughout Minnesota with the opportunity to volunteer as a Guide or to be matched with one. We are particularly focused on women in traditionally underserved communities.

CURE magazine’s December 12 issue reiterates the positive effect on survivorship of having strong social support. We hope 2017 brings meaningful connections for you!

Interesting, I never felt that I was going to die. But after leaving the last phase of chemo, I was in limbo. Thankfully, hooked up with the Dragon Divas. If you like water and exercise, please check out dragondivasmn.org
We are all breast cancer survivors who promote exercise and encourage each other.
