Summertime and Breast Cancer

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 12.27.30 PMAhh, summertime in Minnesota…sunshine, warm temperatures, and outdoor fun. It’s why we’re willing to endure the snow and cold, right? However, for women who have faced a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, thoughts of summer can bring anxiety and concerns:

  • Can I swim with a wig on?
  • Does my medication make me more sensitive to the sun?
  • If I’ve had surgery, what kind of bathing suit can I wear?
  • Can I go on a vacation while undergoing treatment?

We’d like to share some valuable information from trusted websites that addresses some of these issues, and more. We want you to remember that you are not alone in your concerns, and there is so much we can learn from others who’ve experienced breast cancer.

The first article is from the website Breastcancer.org, and offers ideas about scheduling treatments during summer, as well as tips about skin care, bathing suits, and hair loss: http://www.breastcancer.org/tips/seasonal

The second article is from a contributor to CURE magazine. She offers an honest look at her experience on a beach vacation post surgery, with a particular emphasis on the option of using mastectomy swim forms while wearing a bathing suit: http://www.curetoday.com/community/bonnie-annis/2016/06/summer-challenges-for-mastectomy-patients

We hope that you find a helpful tip or two here that may work for you or someone you know. And may your summer bring healing and light!
